SilentMat16 Acoustic Matting For Bonded LVT - 15m x 1m

What Are The Benefits?

SilentMat16 is a high performance acoustic underlay designed to be used under Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT).  Our data shows that this product achieves an impact sound reduction of 18dB when used with 2.5mm thick LVT.  This product will help to reduce sound transmission between floors occurring from footfall or impact noises.  Being only 1.6mm thick this product will not increase floor heights and indentation recovery is optimised.

This product can also be used in conjunction with underfloor heating.

SilentMat16 must be adhered to the subfloor before installing the LVT floor finish in top.  It is designed to be used with LVT 2mm or thicker and is designed to be adhered to concrete and screed subfloors.

When installing this product the floor must be level and smooth, free of dust and debris.  Any holes or cracks in the subfloor much be filled with AC95 Acoustic Sealant.  We recommend that at least a 24 hours acclimatisation period prior to installation is made.  It is recommend that SilentMat16 is installed in temperatures between 18oC and 25oC.  SilentMat16 should first be dry laid and cut at least 50mm over the length required to allow for the product to relax.  During installation a 3mm gap should be left around the perimeter to allow for expansion.  Once the SilentMat16 is installed follow the manufacturers guidelines for the installation of the LVT.  Once completed fill the perimeter gap with AC95 Acoustic Sealant.

What Are The Technical Details?

Product Name SilentMat16
Product Size 15m x 1m
Product Thickness 1.6mm
Area Covered Per Board 15sqm
Product Weight 16kg
Preparation

The floor must be prepared prior to installation by ensuring all surfaces are level and smooth, free of dust and debris and any holes / cracks or similar filled and sealed with AC95 Acoustic Sealant.

The product must be allowed to acclimatise to the environment for 24 hours prior to installation, the temperature of the room should be at least 18°C and relative humidity below 75%. In general working practices outlined in (BS8203: 2017 Code of practice for installation of resilient floor coverings) should be followed.

Perimeter Considerations

Flanking issues can seriously detract from the performance of acoustic flooring, this occurs where sound is able to bypass flooring treatments through adjoining surfaces or through a weak area of the structure. This can both reduce the quality of the flooring and detract from the performance when looking to pass Part E Building requirements. Ensure that the junction between floor and wall contains no defects and the structure and build up of the wall and floor structure does not negatively affect the underlay and floor treatment.

Installation Of SilentMat16

The ideal installation temperature is between 18-35°C with a maximum air relative humidity of 65%. The subfloor temperature should not fall below 10°C, it is important that the flooring and underlay are stored on site at the same temperature as the areas to be installed.

SilentMat16 must be bonded to the subfloor. It is not essential to commence installation in the centre of the room; it is generally more practical to commence along the longest wall running the rolls in parallel. Wherever possible the product should be installed so that the joints run with the direction of the main light in the installation area rather than against it. Ideally this will also be at 90 degrees to the finished floor so that the chance of coinciding joints is minimised. The product should be dry laid into workable areas and cut at least 50mm over the length required and allowed to relax for the acclimatisation period as advised above. After acclimatisation the underlay should then be cut using a utility knife and straight edge and a gap of around 3mm should be left around the perimeter to allow for any expansion. The SilentMat16 should not be in direct contact with any wall, column or skirting board that has not been isolated using a perimeter isolation strip. The product should be adhered to the subfloor using a recommended adhesive strictly in accordance with the installation instructions of the adhesive manufacturer. It is particularly important to refer to the adhesive manufacturer’s advice in respect of trowel sizes, application rates/coverages and open times.

Only spread enough adhesive to cover a workable area, and after the required open time lay the product into the adhesive and smooth out from the centre using a carpet glider or hand roller to ensure that the product is fully into the adhesive and all air bubbles are released. The SilentMat16 should then be fully rolled into the adhesive using a 68kg articulated flooring roller to ensure full adhesion along the entire length and width of the product. All edges should be butt jointed ensuring that all seams and joints are smooth without any voids but not too tight. Open seams with any gaps will “telegraph” through most LVTs, so it is very important that the underlayment work is as smooth and well seamed as possible.

Installation

Once the SilentMat16 is fully bonded to the subfloor, this time will depend on the adhesive used but usually after 24 hours, the LVT can be installed. SilentMat16 should be used with glued down LVT products of a minimum thickness of 2mm so that issues of “telegraphing” through are minimised. To provide noise improvement the product has to have a level of resilience to absorb impact energy and as such adds a degree of softness to the overall floor. This must be born in mind for areas where critical lateral lighting may be present, also please seek advice for installation areas where there may be equipment with extreme point loading. The LVT should be installed following the instructions of the LVT manufacturer using a suitable approved adhesive with correct notched trowel size. SilentMat16 has limited porosity so some wet set adhesives may take longer to go off. Ideally the LVT should be installed at 90° to the SilentMat16 so that the chance of coinciding joints is minimised. It is important to leave a small gap so that the finished floor does not come into contact with any part of the perimeter to avoid flanking problems. The gap should be filled with AC95 Acoustic Sealant.
