Acoustic Treatment 101: The Difference Between Soundproofing and Acoustic Panels
Shaun Snaith
If you’re new to studio setup, you’ve probably heard both “soundproofing” and “acoustic treatment.” They’re not the same and mixing them up can lead to wasted time and money.
What’s the Difference?
Soundproofing:
Stops unwanted sound from entering or leaving a room. This usually involves heavy, dense materials like mass loaded vinyl, acoustic plasterboard, and door seals. It’s about isolation—keeping noise in or out.
Acoustic Treatment:
Improves the sound quality inside your room. Acoustic panels, foam tiles, and bass traps absorb reflections, reduce echo, and help you hear your music accurately.
When Do You Need Each?
If you’re bothered by noisy neighbours, traffic, or want to avoid disturbing others: focus on soundproofing.
If your recordings sound echoey, muddy, or unclear: focus on acoustic treatment.
