When it comes to soundproofing a ceiling to minimize the transmission of TV noise and talking noise, our Basic Timber Ceiling Soundproofing System offers a simple and effective solution. This system is specifically designed to enhance the sound insulation properties of ceilings in various domestic properties.
The system we have developed is user-friendly and requires minimal DIY experience, as it can be easily installed by gluing it to your existing plaster ceiling. Please note that if your ceiling has aertex or wallpaper, it needs to be removed before proceeding with the installation. The system consists of two layers of Advanced Acoustics 5kg Soundproofing Mat and two layers of 12.5mm Acoustic Plasterboard, providing a total thickness of 30mm.
Installation Instructions
- Ensure the ceiling onto which you intend to mount the Basic Timber Ceiling Soundproofing System is sound and free of defects. Remove any wallpaper or loose paint before beginning the installation. The ceiling must be clean, dry, and free from dust, grease, and other contaminants.
- Have any light fittings on the ceiling removed and isolated by a qualified electrician to ensure safety during the installation process.
- To facilitate installation, consider cutting the Soundproofing Mat and Acoustic Plasterboard in half, making them easier to handle. It is recommended to have two people for this installation.
- Start in one corner and apply Advanced Acoustics Contact Adhesive to the ceiling, covering an area slightly larger than the size of the sheet to be fitted. Ensure the adhesive completely covers this area.
- Apply adhesive to the 5kg Soundproofing Mat, ensuring that the entire surface of the mat is covered. There is no right or wrong side to the soundproofing mat.
- Position the Soundproofing Mat in place, aligning it closely with the two walls. Firmly press the matting in place using a clean stiff brush or roller to ensure a strong bond and eliminate air gaps.
- Repeat the process, slightly overlapping the joint between adjacent sections of Soundproofing Mat.
- Trim the joint with a Utility Knife and remove the excess material.
- Reapply adhesive to the joints and firmly press them in place.
- Repeat the process until the entire ceiling is fully covered, taking note of the direction in which you fitted the matting.
- Apply PVC Jointing Tape to the joints to fully seal the soundproofing mat.
- Proceed to fix the first layer of 12.5mm Acoustic Plasterboard in place.
- Starting from one corner, apply adhesive to the ceiling, covering an area slightly larger than the sheet of plasterboard. Also, apply adhesive to the back of the plasterboard sheet, completely covering both surfaces.
- Position the plasterboard in place, ensuring a 5mm gap from the two walls.
- Firmly press the plasterboard in place with a brush or roller to establish a strong bond.
- Additionally, you can use 4-6 screws through the plasterboard and soundproofing mat to mechanically fix the plasterboard to the ceiling rafters. The adhesive will primarily hold the materials in place.
- Repeat the process until the entire ceiling is covered, while maintaining a 5mm gap around the perimeter. Take note of the direction in which you fitted the acoustic plasterboard.
- Once the plasterboard is in place, seal the 5mm gap with AC95 Acoustic Sealant using a caulking gun for precise application. Smooth the sealant over for a neat finish.
- Proceed to apply the second layer of 5kg Soundproofing Mat, ensuring it is installed perpendicular to the first layer.
- Repeat steps 4 to 10 for the second layer.
- Now, you are ready to install the final layer of 12.5mm Acoustic Plasterboard, once again perpendicular to the first layer of plasterboard.
- Repeat steps 13 to 18 for the final layer.
- The ceiling is now ready to be skimmed or tape and jointed, depending on your desired finish.
- Finally, have a qualified electrician reinstate the light fittings.
