Silent Panel 5kg/25mm — MLV & Acoustic Foam Composite Panel

The Silent Panel is a dual-layer acoustic composite panel designed for enclosures, plant rooms, server rooms, and engine rooms where standard acoustic foam alone is not sufficient. It combines a 25mm layer of 90kg/m³ acoustic foam with a 5kg/m² mass loaded vinyl barrier, bonded together and finished with a self-adhesive backing for direct installation onto walls and ceilings.

Most acoustic foam products absorb sound — they do not block it. The Silent Panel does both. The MLV layer adds the mass needed to reduce sound transmission through the panel wall. The high-density foam layer absorbs what remains inside the enclosure, preventing reflections from finding alternative exit points. Together they deliver 31dB of sound reduction in a single 28mm panel, without requiring separate barrier and absorption layers to be installed independently.

The 5kg/25mm is the entry-level specification in the Silent Panel range and the appropriate choice where space is limited, the noise source is moderate in intensity, or the primary problem is high-frequency noise rather than low-frequency machinery noise. At 28mm total thickness it is the most profile-efficient panel in the range. Where low-frequency noise is a significant component of the problem, or where higher absorption performance is required, the 5kg/50mm or 10kg/50mm should be considered instead.

Where to Use the Silent Panel

The Silent Panel is designed for enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces where machinery, equipment, or mechanical plant generates persistent noise that needs to be contained.

Common applications include:

  • Server rooms and IT equipment rooms — server racks, UPS units, and cooling equipment generate constant broadband noise. Lining walls and ceilings with Silent Panel reduces noise escape into adjacent office spaces without affecting ventilation or access.
  • Plant rooms — HVAC equipment, pumps, and mechanical plant running continuously in plant rooms creates both airborne and structure-borne noise. Silent Panel installed on internal wall and ceiling surfaces significantly reduces transmission to occupied areas.
  • Engine rooms and generator enclosures — where combustion engines or generators are housed in dedicated enclosures, Silent Panel provides the mass and absorption needed to contain high-intensity broadband noise across the mid and high frequency range.
  • Compressor enclosures — air compressors generate significant noise in workshop and industrial environments. Silent Panel is used to line custom-built enclosures, reducing noise levels at the operator position and in surrounding areas.
  • Custom acoustic enclosures — where bespoke enclosures are built around specific equipment, Silent Panel provides the acoustic performance in a single product, simplifying specification and installation.

Product Benefits

  • 31dB sound reduction in a single panel. The combination of MLV and high-density foam delivers measurable sound reduction without requiring a multi-layer installation. One product handles both blocking and absorption.
  • 90kg/m³ foam density. Significantly denser than standard acoustic foam tiles. Higher density foam absorbs more effectively across the mid-frequency range and maintains structural integrity under the weight of the bonded MLV layer.
  • Comprehensive fire certification. Rated Class 0 under UK building regulations (BS 476 pt 6 & 7), UL94 V-0, and Class A under ASTM E84-95. Suitable for commercial and industrial installations where fire compliance is required.
  • Self-adhesive installation. Factory-applied adhesive backing allows direct installation onto prepared surfaces without additional fixings. Each panel covers 0.72m², making coverage calculations straightforward.
  • One product, one installation step. Separate barrier and absorption layers are commonly used in enclosure construction but require independent installation and careful sequencing. Silent Panel eliminates this — the barrier and absorption are pre-bonded and installed together.

Installation

The mounting surface must be clean, dry, and free from oil, dust, and defects before installation. For a guaranteed bond, prime the surface with Advanced Acoustics High Bond Contact Adhesive before offering the panel into position. This is particularly important on painted, powdercoated, or porous surfaces.
