Installing our acoustic foam tiles and bass traps included in this kit is very simple.  The first step to take is to work out your preferred layout of acoustic tiles and bass traps.  Do a sketch on paper first to make sure that the layout looks right and you have enough acoustic foam and space for your planned design.  It is best to have small to medium sized clusters of acoustic foam tiles evenly distributed as opposed to one huge cluster of tiles in the middle of a wall.

Once the acoustic tiles and bass traps are mounted to the wall or ceiling they are hard to remove so it is important to get the layout right before you begin.  Once you have a sketch of the layout you plan you can then mark up the wall with the layout.  You can either use pencil, masking tape or lasers to layout the design on the wall or ceiling.

When mounting the acoustic foam to the wall or ceiling apply Advanced Acoustics Contact Adhesive to both the back of the tile or bass traps and the mounting surface.  There is no need to heavily cover the acoustic foam or wall with adhesive, a band of adhesive around the perimeter of the tile or bass trap along with 50% - 75% coverage of the rest of the acoustic tile or bass trap will be fine.  Use the same equivalent amount on the wall.  Avoid overspray on the product and the wall so that adhesive can’t be seen when the tiles are in place.  Masking Tape on the wall will help with this.  If you do get webbing overspray on the tile, don’t touch it, allow it to dry, in most cases you will be able to peel the adhesive off.

We would recommend that you install your Bass Traps first.  You can re-confirm that everything is going to fit and look right before continuing with installing the acoustic tiles.

The adhesive we supply is solvent based so we recommend that you keep all doors of the room and any windows open whilst completing the installation.

If you prefer to have a more temporary installation of acoustic tiles you can mount the tiles onto 6mm MDF or ply to create panels of acoustic tiles.  These panels can then be hung on the wall using a D-Ring and picture hook for a damage free installation.  If fitting them to a ceiling then 4 mirror plates would be required.

How does the Wedge kit compare with the Slider and Wedge PRO kits?

The Wedge is the entry-level kit. Its 40mm tiles reach NRC 0.60 (Class D) and work best at higher frequencies — 1.00 at 2kHz and 1.19 at 4kHz — which makes them effective against flutter echo and harsh, bright reflections. Absorption is lower further down: 0.25 at 250Hz and 0.47 at 500Hz. The Slider kit (65mm, NRC 0.85, Class C) reaches 0.45 at 250Hz and 0.90 at 500Hz, and the Wedge PRO kit (75mm, NRC 0.95, Class B) reaches 0.57 at 250Hz. If echo and brightness are the main problem, the Wedge kit does the job. If the room also sounds boxy or muddy in the lower mids, a deeper tile is worth the step up.

What difference do the 3ft bass traps in the Large kit make?

Each 3ft trap is 915mm long against 610mm for the 2ft traps in the Small kits, and it absorbs more at low frequencies: Equivalent Absorption Area of 0.9 at 160Hz, against 0.5 to 0.7 for the 2ft traps depending on the profile. Across the four traps that is about 3.7m of corner length, a little over a third of the vertical corner length in a room with a 2.4m ceiling. The tiles also cover 4.46m². The traps are modules, so they can be stacked, and extra traps can be added to build up corner height.

Will the kit stop sound getting in or out of my room?

No. Acoustic foam improves the sound inside the room by reducing echo, reverberation and bass build-up. It does not block sound passing through walls, floors or ceilings. To keep noise in or out you need mass and decoupling, such as Mass Loaded Vinyl and acoustic plasterboard. If that is your goal, deal with it first, then use the starter kit to improve how the room sounds.

I'm renting — can the tiles come off without damaging the walls?

Contact adhesive is a permanent bond. Expect marks on the wall, and possible damage to the tile, if it's removed. For a removable installation, mount the tiles on 6mm MDF or plywood to make panels and hang them with D-rings and picture hooks. For ceiling panels, use four mirror plates per panel. This lets you take the panels down and re-hang them without damaging the wall or ceiling.
